While covering the basics of the natural dye process, this presentation will also be an overview of how we know what dyes were used in extant textiles, the dye trade, medieval dye books and recipes, and information on some of today’s rarest natural dyes: murex snails and kermes bugs.
Starting with an overview of fiber prep, we’ll mordant yarn in alum and copper. Then, using red, yellow, and blue (madder, osage orange, and indigo) natural dyes learn to dye and overdye to create a rainbow of yarn! In the afternoon, we’ll do a deeper dive into indigo and cochineal: pre-reduced indigo, indigo vats and dried indigo leaves, and the myriad of colors possible from shifting the PH of cochineal, during and after dyeing.
